The levels of this project funding are as follows: We hope to raise $100,000 to complete the full studio and work stations but have set our Kickstarter goal at $23,000 for the basic on-air studio construction.
$23,000 (goal) for construction of a basic radio on-air/recording facility. This will allow the boys to record audio and "go live" from the campus in a safe and secure environment.
$35,000 for 2 additional work stations and networking for classes in audio recording and editing, plus the above.
$65,000 for construction of a permanent radio studio space, plus the above.
$100,000 for a permanent recording space, plus the above. This will network the rehearsal space and recording console with the on-air radio station. Students will have access to training on technology necessary to turn original music scores into programming for Alpha Boys' School Radio. A fully integrated broadcast and music production studio for the next generation of students at Alpha Boys' School is the goal of this project.
YOUR BACKING IS NEEDED
Government support covers less than half Alpha’s annual budget. The balance is made up by donations and entrepreneurial self-help initiatives linked to vocational programs. 80 boys live and learn at Alpha Boys' School today. About 30 of them are in the band. This Kickstarter campaign will create important, real-world training and employment opportunities for students like them interested in media production, promotion or presentation. With your help, and within just a couple years, hundreds of students will have the opportunity to learn the new skills necessary to join the global marketplace that is today's music industry.
WHAT WE HAVE SO FAR
Alpha Boys' School, with the help of WXGR, a not-for-profit, community radio station in the USA (www.wxgrfm.org), launched "Alpha Boys' School Radio" in September of 2013. This online radio station can be streamed now at www.alphaboysschoolradio.com and via its FREE mobile application for smart phones available in Android and iOS app stores. The radio station is fully automated 24 hours per day, 7 days per week broadcasting to 60,000 unique listeners per month around the world. The Alpha Boys' School Radio format plays the best of ska, rocksteady and reggae music. All of the music heard on ABSR has at least one graduate of Alpha Boys' School on the track. This is 'all Alpha, all the time'!
Alpha Boys' School Radio has been funded to date by WXGR, and Michael Wadleigh (Board President of Gritty, the USA-based 501(c)3 non-profit that operates WXGR Radio), as well as a most generous equipment donation from Seton Hall University. Kickstarter funding will provide for construction of the studio space at Alpha Boys' School (26 South Camp Road in Kingston, JA) in a building the school has set aside for the creative arts. If we can reach our Stretch Goals funding will also provide for production workstations that will allow the students to learn "real world" skills in the art of media and radio programming and production. When constructed by July of 2014, and if fully funded, the studio will serve many purposes including a live, on-air training center and recording space for not only the 80 boys that attend Alpha, but also teachers, students and beneficiaries from outside the school.
