LESTER STERLING & STRANGER COLE - "BANGARANG"

5/3/2016

Alpha past student Lester Sterling is credited with recording perhaps the first reggae song of all time...
His debut solo album, Bangarang, was released on Pama Records in 1969. Classic early reggae, producer Striker Lee often claims it as the first proper reggae tune, featuring the John Crow skank organ shuffle c/w updated dub.

I love Jamaican music beginning with the ska era and onwards. I am familar with Alpha Boys School and their history of turning out brilliant musicians. As for the song "bangarang", I believe it is a musical juggernaut! I couldn't begin to tell you how many times I have been somewhere - anywhere is more like it - and started singing "bangarang" out loud. True. The music and words! It has become part of my physiology. I have heard Max Max Romeo is uncredited background vocal. I like all the vocalists on the song. I love it. One of a kind.
