Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Mountains to the north east of Kingston, Gordon Town offers a small town vibe 20 minutes outside the city. Perhaps best known in recent times as home to Miss Lou, the teacher, folklorist, activist, artist and actor. The Honourable Louise Bennett-Coverley O.M passed away in 2006 and is still remembered as one of Jamaica's "greatest treasures", according to the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper. Gordon Town has another attraction. This one brings people of all ages up from Kingston or down the hill from Irish Town to bath in the Gordon Town Falls.
The Gordon Town Falls are reached by driving through Gordon Town, bearing left at the police station and bearing left again at the fork. Drivers beware, it is a one-lane road from the fork. The road ends a mile or so ahead. A path (see the photo below) used for generations linking mountainside villages leads you to the falls, about 400 years from the parking area. The church on the opposite bank from the falls lets you know you are close and shows how the place has spiritual as well as natural importance. Two pools run clear and cold. Usually quite, the falls can get busy with families and visitors on national holidays.
