ALPHA UPDATE AT A GLANCE

Alpha has been a non-profit, vocational school for at-risk youth since 1880. The school closed the residence in 2014 and has been operating as a day school for the last 2 years. The name of the school changed from Alpha Boys School to Alpha Institute in September 2014.
There are 125 young men who are 16 to 20 years old learning one of 5 trades -music, barbering, screen printing, woodwork and landscaping. Some students pay a subsidized fee of US$60 per year to attend. Most attend for free. Alpha also provides social, medical, and family support.

Brief History

Alpha's music program began in 1893. Over the past 100 + years, alumni have become jazz innovators (saxophonist Joe Harriott, trumpeter Dizzy Reece), ska music pioneers (trombonist Don Drummond, saxophonist Tommy McCook) and reggae icons (Grammy nominee Winston Foster, singer Johnnie Osbourne) not to mention respected session and touring musicians all over the world.
