This February, the 2nd online Reggae Auction will take Jamaican culture international while directly supporting academic, social and vocational services for inner city youth in Kingston. Offering reggae and Jamaican cultural experiences in Jamaica and abroad, the online Reggae Auction connects Alpha’s legacy developing pioneers in jazz, ska and reggae with its current music training and social services. Located at 26 South Camp Road in Kingston, Jamaica since 1880 and operated by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, a catholic order of nuns, since 1890, Alpha offers vocational, educational, social and employment services to 150 young men and their families. The 2 to 3-year vocational program offers certificates in woodworking, landscaping, barbering, screen printing and music. A small percentage of Alpha’s budget is publicly supported with the majority of its bottom line covered by private donations and the sales of items manufactured in the school’s woodshop and screen printing as well as digital copying and binding facilities.
