Named for an Italian saint who dedicated his life to serving youth, the Religious Sisters of Mercy in Jamaica opened St John Bosco Children’s Home in 1960. Located in the rural parish of Manchester, Bosco offers residential, educational and vocational services to youth 8-18 years old. There are 150 Bosco residents placed by Jamaica’s Child Development Agency. Like Alpha in Kingston, Bosco provides a half day of educational training in math and English and a half day of vocational training in animal husbandry, butchering and hospitality service. Bosco hospitality service students gain valuable on the job experience through the 250-person banquet hall which is open for public and private fundations as well as The Falls, a new outdoor restaurant on Bosco’s campus currently making culinary waves from Mandeville to Kingston.
