Winston Foster, better known as Yellowman, is one of Jamaica’s most influential dancehall deejays and a major figure in the development of reggae and dancehall music. He is performing Sunday Sept 13 at the Supernova International Ska Festival in Hampton, VA.
Born in Kingston in 1956, he attended the Alpha Boys School from 1967-1974. Foster rose to prominence in the late 1970s through his distinctive deejay style, energetic performances and playful, often humorous lyrics.
His success during the early 1980s helped bring Jamaican dancehall to international audiences, with songs such as “Zungguzungguguzungguzeng” becoming enduring classics. Yellowman’s career has spanned more than four decades, and his influence can be heard in generations of Jamaican deejays and dancehall performers.
