Performing Saturday, September 12 at the Supernova International Ska Festival in Hamptom Virginia (click here), Out of Control Army has built its reputation around a sound that is as much about the size of the ensemble as the energy of its performances.
Based in Mexico City and founded in 2015 by saxophonist and composer José “Deals” Olán, the band brings together musicians with backgrounds in groups including Los de Abajo, Maskatesta and Los Victorios. Their lineup features a particularly large horn section giving the band a powerful sound.
Rather than sticking to one period of the music, Out of Control Army moves between traditional ska, 2-Tone, ska-jazz and swing-influenced arrangements. Well rehearsed with punchy horn lines, the result is a style that connects the Jamaican roots of ska with Mexico’s large and passionate ska culture.
