Leroy 'The Don' Smart became known for his entertaining performances where theatrics were as much on display as his incredible vocal talent.
In 1985, Leroy Smart and Sugar Minott linked up at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in Kingston.
Leroy Smart attended the Alpha Boys School while Lennie Hibbert was band director. After leaving Alpha, Smart linked up with Jimmy Radway to write his first hit, Mother Liza, which featured Alpha grads Bobby Ellis, the great arranger and trumpet player, and tenor saxophonist Richard 'Dirty Harry' Hall. (Hall and Smart would later link up in the classic Rockers film - more info). The producers and the hits kept coming.
Sugar Minott's Youth Promotion sound system performed regularly in Kingston's Maxfield Park area. His Black Roots label helped to launched the careers of Barry Brown, Tenor Saw, Little John, Tony Tuff, Barrington Levy and Horace Andy.
